Root canal treatment explained

Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is a specialised dental procedure where the damaged or infected dental pulp from a tooth is removed and the root is then filled. It prevents the further developing and spreading of infection and the possibility of that tooth falling out.

Root canal treatment is recommended in instances where an abscess (a pocket of pus that forms at the tip of the tooth’s root) becomes visible.

Root canal procedure

Root canal treatment is usually completed over two or three appointments.
Appointment 1:
  • An access hole is opened and the damaged dental pulp tissues, any bacteria toxins, nerve tissue and related debris are removed.
  • The dentist then applies a dressing with root canal medicines and protects it with a temporary filling.
  • Following the cleaning procedure, the interior of the tooth’s root is filled and sealed with root canal filling material, usually gutta-percha (a natural rubber). The hole that was drilled for access to the tooth’s root is then sealed with a filling.
  • The tooth must be completely restored by a permanent filling, or alternatively by a post and core and a crown, depending on the remaining tooth structure, which will be done at the next appointment.
Appointment 2:
  • The dentist removes the temporary filling and root canal medicines and fills the root with root canal filling.
  • If you are having a crown, the dentist inserts a post and core, and prepares the tooth for a crown.
  • A temporary crown is fitted.
  • The crown will be custom-made in the laboratory, which will take two to three days.
Appointment 3:
  • If you are having a permanent crown, it is fitted at this appointment.

Root canal treatment – pain

For some patients, root canal treatment is one of the most feared dental procedures, perhaps because of a painful abscess that necessitated the root canal procedure.

However, the intense pain often associated with root canal problems is relieved at the first appointment, once the dentist removes the cause – either the infection or the damage to the tooth.

At Affordable Dentist Melbourne (ADM), our dentists assert that modern root canal treatment is relatively painless because the pain is controlled with a local anaesthetic during the procedure and pain control medication can be used before and/or after treatment.

FAQs

The most painful part of root canal treatment is before you even get to the dental surgery, with most patients complaining of a severe toothache. The intense pain is relieved at the first appointment, once the infection or damage has been resolved.

The procedure itself is generally painless, as our dentists administer local anaesthetic, and pain control medication can be used before and after treatment.
The pain from an infected root canal generally subsides with the first treatment, as the dentist cleans out the infected or damaged root and applies a dressing with root canal medication and protects it with a temporary filling. The entire procedure usually takes two or three appointments over two or three weeks.
Properly treated, a tooth is not dead after root canal treatment. Once the infection is controlled or the damage repaired, the tooth is filled or covered by a crown and should last a lifetime.
Two or three appointments are generally needed for root canal treatment. At the first appointment, the root canal is cleaned out and any damage is repaired, and a temporary filling is fitted. At the second appointment, a permanent filling is placed and if necessary, the tooth is prepared for a crown. At the third appointment, the crown is fitted.
The cost of the root canal will depend on the tooth, case complexity, and no of canals. The costs could range between $700-$1800 for root canal treatment (not including the crown). The first stage of root canal (open and drain) relieving the pain could cost between $200-$400.
